A Time to Think...
Topic: The Great Society v. 2.0: Promoting Just Economic Theory in the Age of Social Media. It's a free lecture and discussion hosted by The Walsingham Society, featuring Devin Foley, co-founder and president of Intellectual Takeout. Intellectual Takeout "empowers people with the knowledge, clarity, and confidence to live freely."
Foley will discuss and take questions on his experiences disseminating Rerum Novarum, Pope Leo XVIII's 1891 encyclical addressing the condition of the working class. Foley will focus particularly on distributing historic, topical, yet complex, information through online media, particularly Facebook, to a largely secular audience.
The discussion will provide a glimpse into the psychology of Gen Y, how popular culture and secularism inform Facebook, how Rerum Novarum is presented on “Intellectual Takeout,” and how proper framing can help a broad audience understand its relevance today.
Founded in 2009, Intellectual Takeout is a non-political, not-for-profit educational institution based in Minnesota with research and marketing staff and volunteers worldwide. The institution researches complex ideas and policy issues and makes them digestible by aggregating and packaging academic, think tank, government and historical research into quotes, charts, graphs, commentary, studies, videos, podcasts, primary documents, books, and links to other sites.
The Walsingham Society of Christian Culture and Western Civilization was founded by graduates and friends of The College of St. Thomas More. The society aims to cultivate minds and improve lives and communities through guided critical reading and discussion of the perennial truths found in the great books of the Western intellectual tradition.
